Interior neon question

Post by Blindmelon »

I want to put a couple of neon tubes under my dash. I've done this before but not with neon tubes. So when I went out looking for the lights yesterday, all I could find were the ones you plug into your lighter socket. The problem is this, I'd like to have them hardwired in the car like everything else. Does anyone know if you can just cut the adapter off, run the positive to a constant power source and then ground them? Or, does anyone know of neon lighting that doesn't plug into the lighter? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

O.K. This is an absolute nightmare of a situation.. What you will find is that the cigarate lighter actually has some heavy resistors in it which adjusts the current flow.. remember V=IR... O.K. I have approx 10 neons including under body neons wired up to 2 switches. internal and External neaon. All of which are hard wired.. So Yes it can be done.. Can it be done easy.. Nope! There is actually a cigarette output splitter that you can purcase which allows you to connect 6-10 neons into. If you bought one of these then It would be alot simpler.. The problem I found was that cigarette socket wiring was significantly different =between manufactures. This is an easy way around the problem.. Note I suggest you also buy a relay as well as it well help regulate voltage alot better and also reduces the chance of developing a annoying high pitch hummmmmmm that neons can induce into the cars earth.

Buy your neons and pull apart the lighter socket.. usually only 4 screws.. What you will find is that you can quite easily see the red(power) and the black Earth wire.. What you need to do it connect these to your car earth and power- run off a swith, Then put the case back on the cigarett socket and hide it up in your dash or somewhere out of site..

Hope this helps!

Wow. If you know that much about it you must have done some neon installs and therefore I will definitely be taking your advice. Thank you very much. It sounds like it's going to be a pain in the *** , but that's half the fun, right?!

Cheers

I forgot to mention! Neons are not light norla lights.. ie: when you blow them up you cannott just replace the bulb.. So if you accidentally short something... then you have just wasted your cash.. HINT: DISCONNECT BATTERY!!!!!!!!
