Need some advice on an MX-3

Post by Noobi »

There is a red 1994 MX-3 5 spd 4-cyl 135k miles for sale in the small town I live in, but there are a few issues with it. According to the owners, the hood was crushed which broke the cam gear. There is no asking price listed, they just said "best offer" and I'm thinking I might be able to score this car for around $500. I'm curious what would be a good price for this car. I know I haven't provided a lot of information, but that's all I have to go on right now. I'm not too knowledgeable about cars, but I have some friends that are :) Also, I have a 99 Civic EX, so I can keep driving that while I fix the MX-3. I would also like to know if replacing these items is a real in-depth process or fairly easy or somewhere in between. Thanks in advance for the help.

Unfortunately they don't have any pics of the car and I haven't been to see it, so I can't verify the condition of the paint job and all, I'm just going on their word when they say it is in good condition until I actually see it. I'm waiting for my friend to be able to go see the car with me b/c he knows more about cars than I do.

A friend of mine told me that if I get the car, I should go ahead and change the head on it instead of just the cam gear. I was wondering if this is advice is good advice or bad advice.

If you're going to go through all that trouble, might as well repalce the whole engine. alljapaneseengines.com in Opa Locka, FL will sell you a KF-ZE for $525.

then I would have to get someone to put it in for me, b/c i don't have the equipment or the know-how for that matter to install an engine. If the labor cost is under $1000 it would still be a good deal, but then i'm not sure what it would cost to have an engine put in.

An egine swap would probibly the most reasonalbe thing to do, however, not a K series engine. The car in question is a 4cyl, the swap would be alot of costum work and a price garunteed to be over $1000. A good BPD or BPT can be swapped for around 1000 dependeding on how muhc you do yourself, not not near as much costum.
