Stuff to do?

Post by UoMDeacon »

It's spring break over here, and I'm pretty bored, since I decided to stay in town and work instead of heading out. Can anyone suggest something I can do on my car to pass the time? Maybe replace my stock intake? Please keep in mind college student budget ;-)

giving the engine bay a good clean is always nice. cheap, doesnt take too long, and just plain looks better when you pop the hood. Replacing the intake is a good pass the time/power mod too. Im on a college break too, and have a custom intake, headlight mod, and interior work on my list of to do's. Then again theres always studying to be done

Have all your typical break-down items been replaced within the last 60K miles?

Timing belt
Water pump
Distributor
Thermostat

Regular service all up to date?

Coolant flush
Spark plugs
Cap
Rotor
Spark plug wires

Id' just like to mention that i have a 1992 MX-3 GS with 190,000km's on it. I bought the car with 100,000km's on it and i have yet to replace the Water pump / Distributor / Cap / Rotor / Spark Plug Wires. Don't replace anything as long as it's working...when it goes, replace it.

First off, a cap and rotor are tune up items. you should be changing those rgularly. They won't completely break because there are no moving parts to them. But they do wear down, and it will help your milage and engine response.

Then, the water pump.....if you don't replcae a $50 part while you're in doing the timing belt, you're retarded. The timing belt is the biggest time consuming PITA ever, and you'd have to go through it all over again if your water pump breaks .... since it's behind your timing belt.

First...Do NOT us PVC to make an intake! One of my friends did this on her Eclipse and went the engine got hot it would put out horrible fumes that went right back into the car. Also it looks like crap! Just go to you local salvage yard and look around. Chances are you can find an intake piping from another car that'll work. (ex an Integra)
Second..I don't know if this is true for the V6 or not but in my RS the cap and roter went and I was stranded so I think you should atleast check it at tuneup time. Also, my RS had 200,000 miles on it when the water pump went so you'd be better off replacing it now.
