blue smoke on start up

Post by blazers1011 »

O.K. here we go. When i start my car in the morning or after work ( when it has sat for a good amount of time) it pushes blue smoke for a while specially when i get on the throttle and bring it up over 4000 rpm. i am very picky about how my car runs and i would like to know what is causeing it.. If anybody has and ideas or knows what it is can you please let me know..
Thanx..
Trevor

Oil can get into the cylinders from above, down the valve stems - seals or worn guides. Or from below - worn/broken piston ring(s). If its worse when its stood for a while, from above is more likely.
[ December 21, 2002: Message edited by: IanL ]

Guys!!! if the engine is buring oil..the smoke would be black...if its blue that means that there is a coolant leak into the engine somewhere....thats going to be hard to find....and just for the record..if its white smoke...that water...which most cars give off at start off. But you got a coolent leak somewhere...good luck trying to find it. :D

one more things....smell the oil.....take the dip stick ...wipe it on a paper towel.....and smell it...if your engine is buring oil..the oil will have a burn smell to it.

I'm 90% sure that blue smoke is oil burning. Not sure what black would be tho, carbon maybe? later,

Hmmm. Could be - maybe if the problem is worn or broken ring(s), the combustion products could get into the sump. If (as more likely) its down the valve stems, it would have to be up the exhaust valve stem on the exhaust stroke. That would probably make a lot of gunge on the underside of the oil filler cap. Worth a look.

BLUE smoke is OIL. If the blue smoke is at startup, then most likely you have worn valve guides. If it's all the time, then you have worn piston rings/bores.
BLACK smoke is a rich air/fuel mixture.
WHITE smoke is water/coolant or condensation if it at a cold startup. It's only if you have white smoke once that engine is warm, and you keep having to top up the coolant, that you have a problem. If the ambient temperature is cold you may have white smoke all the time. My Eunos Presso has done 35,000 miles, and throws white smoke out when it's cold. I've never had to top up the coolant.
Hope this helps.
Jeremy

Jeremy is correct, blue smoke is oil, white smoke is coolant <assuming its not freezing out>

Are Valve guides expensive to replace?
have had some trouble with this myself.
I recently replaced my cat. though, and it seems to have reduced the blue smoke alot.
A busted cat. can`t make blue smoke I guess?
(better to ask than to remain ignorant) ;P
nope-mx3

Since the function of the cat is to reduce combustion products in the exhaust, it is reasonable to assume that an efficient cat could reduce the visible signs of the products (i.e. blue smoke). Unfortunately, that doesn't cure your problem; merely suppresses the symptoms.

mine has been doing that for a while and it is the valve seals I dont know how much to change them and I don't think I want to $$$$$$$
My ze has been smoking on startup and deceleration for a year with no ill affects
I would like to know if there is an additive anyone has had luck with to solve the problem.

My 94 v6 gives a little puff of smoke on cold starting, also get burning oil smell after highway driving.
I've been told it is a leak in the oil sending unit.
