Letting the problem go on is a bad thing. White smoke is usually not related to burning oil, its usually condensation thats white smoke(water burning). Blue smoke is oil. Does the car smoke than after a while go away or does it smoke constantly? My guess is its most likley rings or valve seals, but hey what do i know, im only a hobbiest. Definatlley get it checked out. I'd jsut replace the motor totally. Its better to spend $800 now and have a car then to spend $1200 later when you're broken down 100 miles away from your house. Good luck.

white smoke can be the anti freeze as well... we had a semi that would pour out the white smoke because it was burning the anti freeze
