Honestly.. I dont know if I would shave the head at all.. stock the DOHC 1.6L is running a 9.4:1 compression ratio already.. which is pretty decent to begin with. Plus if you do shave the head and run into a overheating issue where you warp the head slightly, you wont have that extra bit of toleranc...

If your going to shave your head down, I would recommend replacing your head bolts. The stress and shearing of a aluminum head on a iron block are unreal from the rapid temperature changes. If you raise your compression ratio this will increase those stresses and if your using old head bolts that ar...

It’s cheaper to get a complete re-man then taking it to a shop by quite a bit!! Just for all the valves and seal’s come to the same price as a re-man but if you get a re-man everything is seated and built back up to speck way better way to go!! Yes it can be cheaper to go this route.. by quite a bi...

Typhoonk - I am currently doing a rebuild on my head as well... Should have the job finished on monday.. Definately replace all exaust valves. Intake valves can likely be bead blasted and smoothed and should be fine. I am pricing exaust valves for my head now and its looking like they are going to b...

Anyone in the Seattle area...
Anyone around here in the seattle area that has experience doing the ATX to MTX conversion? And more importantly.. anyone with that experience interested in making a bit of cash to do one to my car sometime this summer?

Thanks again for your thoughts guys.. I do appreciate it :) Tric - See all my plugs are showing a nice tan as well with normal gap as well.. yet still a burnt valve on #3. What - Thats interesting news on the retarded ignition timing at WOT. I typically run 4-6 degrees of extra advance on my cars to...

Thanks for the reply. Does the SOHC engine use a different O2 sensor or ECM than the DOHC? My O2 sensor is a single wire type as well. Are the valves in the SOHC head bigger than the valves in the DOHC? There are a lot of variables here unfortunately.. But so far the only common denominator I have b...

Check for excessive play in the distributor shaft. You can also look at the inside of the distributor cap and look for a unusual wear ring around the central electrode (black thing sticking down in the middle) see if your rotor is impacting and scraping against the inside of your distributor cap. Tu...

Ok.. found out a bit of info.. somewhat still speculation.. but from what the mazda tech and I can deduce.. here is what is causing the burnt valve problem. As we all know.. Mazda recommends that we replace the O2 sensor every 60k miles. What happens is that as the O2 sensor ages, it loses its abili...

Burned Valves
As you have seen from my other posts, I likely have a burned valve in my #3 cylinder on my 94 RS DOHC 1.6L. Apparently Tric has also had this same issue and when I ripped the head off a 95 RS this morning at the junk yard I discovered that it too had a burned valve on the #3 cylinder. There are nume...

Well I tried osmosis.. slept with my shop manual under my pillow.. that didnt seem to work to well.. so I hung out with brilliant wrench turners and professional knucklebusters and learned that while I can usually do most automotive repairs if I have to.. I'd much rather pay someone else to do it fo...
