I'll bet you anything that clip wasn't sitting right, and that is why the shaft wouldn't go back in. The clip has to sit with the opening facing up. I did this yesterday and after having trouble getting the shaft back in, I went to the chilton's book. The book said the clip has to sit with the openi...

i have about 2 hours left of work to get done, mostly just tiny things...then my car will run again! i started the swap friday afternoon and i am going to finish it up saturday, so hopefully it will run right i will share the results on saturday night i'm excited!
